The 7 Chakras and How they Affect Your Being
Share
Chakra — derived from the Sanskrit term “cakra,” meaning “wheel” or “disk” — are concentrated energy centers of the body. They are spinning wheels of energy or light that keep us functioning at optimal levels, both physically and mentally.
Major and minor chakras exist in our energetic body systems, which can affect our wellbeing on different levels. If chakras are blocked or are not functioning properly, we impede our energy flow and expose ourselves to illness. Feelings of anxiety, for instance, can result from an unhealthy flow of chakra caused by blocking feelings of anger or not speaking the truth.
To be more in tune with your chakra, here are the seven chakras and how they can affect your entire being:
1. Base or Root Chakra (Muladhara)
- Message: “I exist”
- Color: Red
- Element: Earth
This chakra rests at the base of the spine and is closest to the earth, hence its element. It is related to survival and security. This gives us the power to take charge and create security for our own lives, making the world around us safe to enjoy.
2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)
- Message: “I desire”
- Color: Orange
- Element: Water
This chakra is found in the lower abdomen and is related to sexuality, a desire for pleasure from all aspects of life, and creativity. Our dreams and our passions are governed by this chakra, which can help us bring them to fruition.
3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)
- Message: “I control”
- Color: Yellow
- Element: Fire
This chakra is also known as the “navel chakra” and is the “fire in your belly.” Powerful as this chakra is, it can lead to anger, lack of direction, and obsessive-compulsive control when it isn’t in harmony with the other chakras in our body. However, when it flows freely and healthily, it can lead us to control our destiny and accomplish our dreams.
4. Heart Chakra (Anahata)
- Message: “I love”
- Color: Green
- Element: Air
At the center of this chakra is the heart and it is naturally related to love and compassion. It is both about selflessly giving and being open to receive love. When blocked, it can lead to feelings of loneliness, jealousy, and the inability to trust and connect with others.
5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)
- Message: “I express”
- Color: Blue
This chakra involves the throat, which is what we use to speak the truth in this world. Communication is at the crux of this chakra. When flowing at optimum levels, this chakra lets you have the ability to ask for what you need, as well as verbally reflect the truth.
6. Third-Eye Chakra (Ajna)
- Message: “I am the witness”
- Color: Indigo
Located between the eyebrows, this chakra allows you to be open to your inner guidance through meditation and visualization. With a healthy flow, this chakra will assist you towards the right path through wisdom, inspiration, and intuition; however, an imbalance can hinder one from clarity and seeing the bigger picture.
7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrāra)
- Message: “I am that I am”
- Color: Violet or violet-white
Located a little above the top of the head, this chakra represents the silence between space and spiritual connection. Tranquility, cosmic consciousness, open-mindedness, bliss, and the knowledge of being one with the universe is what is at the center of this chakra.
